Surfers get out in the waves whatever the weather but if you don’t fancy putting on a wetsuit through the winter then perhaps try a leisurely stroll or a full day of coastal walking.

Did you know that the South West has over 630 miles of coastal paths? Winter is the perfect time to grab an OS map and take to the paths and styles that weave across the coast and countryside, the views are spectacular. Whether you are looking for an afternoon stroll to take you to a beauty spot, or to embark on the challenge of hiking the entire route winter is the perfect time for a walk.

So why not enjoy a day out under your own steam! We have two great walks along the coast from Watergate Bay.

South towards Porth

Leaving Watergate Bay to the South – Make your way through the Extreme Academy car park where you will find sign posts for the cliff path.

The majority of the path is well gravelled and easy to walk though suitable walking shoes are always recommended! Continue up the path and you will find some beautiful views of the bay.

If you follow the path as it winds its way along the coast, we reckon within an hour you will reach the village of Porth with its general amenities.

This path is unfenced and does run very close to the edge at times along with loose stones. We would recommend you exercise caution.

North towards Bedruthan

Leaving Watergate Bay to the North – Head up the hill and turn left behind the hotel. Up the steps surrounded by the fencing, you will see the coast path clearly signposted.

The first part of the path is rather steep and there are tree roots and loose stones to look out for. However, as you round the corner you are greeted with stunning views and the path flattens off.

If you follow the path as it winds its way along the coast, we reckon within an hour the stunning sight of Bedruthan Steps will await you. This path is unfenced and does run very close to the edge at times along with loose stones. We would recommend you wear suitable shoes and exercise caution.

Follow the path along and above Bedruthan Steps is a fabulous National Trust café serving up homemade meals and cakes.
