Cornwall’s top ten festivals in 2013

It’s fair to say that Cornwall hosts and eclectic mix of festivals throughout the year providing entertainment for everyone in the family, from Rock Oyster Festival to Boardmasters.

Which festivals will you be attending this year?

1. Rock Oyster Festival

Rock Oyster Festival is a mid-summer celebration of food, music and art.

Held on the banks of the Camel Estuary in North Cornwall, Rock Oyster Festival attracts more than 5000 people who come to enjoy the unique blend of food, music and arts. It is a proper family festival with plenty of entertainment for both adults and children. Executive Chef, Neil Haydock is a regular in the Chef’s Theatre and the annual Oyster Shucking.

2. Beach Break Live

20th – 24th June

‘Making festival history, out with the old and in with the New(Quay)’

Newquay is going to be transformed when Beach Break Live rolls into town, with boat parties, secret gigs in greasy spoons, classic clubs and ye old pubs plus hidden rooftop raves and pool parties; it is the ultimate student festival! The 2013 line-up sees Jake Bugg headline the weekend. In short Beach Break is: 300 acts, 30 venues, 24 hour music and plenty of mischief.

Beach Break Live will also be making a small appearance at Watergate Bay when they host a kitesurfing competition at the North end of the beach.

3. Fowey Mussel Fest

22nd – 23rd June

A packed weekend programme of live music, cookery demonstrations, boat trips, pirate sea shanties, sword fighting and plenty of Fowey River mussels and oysters. Get along and enjoy the fun, eat alfresco, see all that Fowey has to offer.

4. Boconnoc Steam Fair

An old fashioned steam extravaganza held annually in the magnificent grounds of the Boconnoc Estate by the the Liskeard Steam and Vintage Club. One of the leading events of its kind in the South West. Expect magnificent steam engines, fair ground rides, vintage cars and other steam driven machinery, there will be something for all the family.

5. Boardmasters

7th - 11th August

A surf, skate and music festival situated across two legendary beaches on the beautiful Cornish coast; Fistral and Watergate Bay. In recent years, Boardmasters has become the festival to go to in Cornwall, and this year is set to be no different. Basement Jaxx, The Vaccines, Everything Everything and Ben Howard are set to play. And we personally can’t wait to welcome Board masters to Watergate Bay!

6. Electric Beach

This Summer, for the second year Watergate Bay will be transformed into Electric Beach. Feel free to have a surf, sunbathe and generally beach it up… there will be a great line-up, a vast array of delicious BBQ food and a fully licensed bar; fun for everyone!

7. Newquay Fish Festival

The Newquay Fish Festival gives Newquay an opportunity to showcase one of its hidden gems ‘the harbour’. Now in its 11th year the Newquay Fish Festival is one of Cornwall’s most established food and crafts shows.

Executive Chef, Neil Haydock will be demonstrating his take on a fish dish at this years festival.

8. Cornwall Food and Drink Festival

27th - 29th September

Celebrating its tenth year, Cornwall Food and Drink Festival will be returning to Lemon Quay, Truro. Now firmly established as one of the nation’s favourite food festivals with everything on sale either produced or processed in the county. New for 2013, is the pop-up restaurant feature, which will host a selection of Cornwall’s best hoteliers and restaurateurs offering a taste of their mouth-watering signature dishes in a street food style.

9. Looe Music Festival

Cornwall’s Looe Music Festival was launched in 2011 with a mission to bring the best live bands to its sunny little fishing port and have a big party on the beach at the same time. The line-up this year see’s The Darkness descend on Looe along with Chas & Dave, Seth Lakeman and local band Company B.

10. Falmouth Oyster Festival

10th - 13th October

Falmouth Oyster Festival celebrates the beginning of the oyster dredging season with live celebrity chef demos, music, a town parade and oyster shucking competition. The festival is a must for all oyster, seafood and maritime heritage enthusiasts!
