Cardio cycle, better known as spinning, is a 40 minute cycle based workout class held every Tuesday and Thursday at Watergate Bay Hotel and instructed by Carl Coombes, Sports Manager at the Extreme Academy.
Cardio cycle is a full on cardiovascular workout on specialist stationary bikes. The bikes consist of a singular front wheel and brake that can be adjusted to suit the desired intensity of the work out.
We sent our Digital Marketing Exec, Lucie, to check out the class, here’s how she got on.
‘At first I was apprehensive, having never been to a spinning class before, but that quickly turned to enjoyment as Carl put everyone at ease explaining the class was intended to be a personal workout, so it was up to us how hard we pushed ourselves.
The first few minutes of the class Carl helped us all individually, set up our bikes so that they were comfortable to ride. One lady remarked she has never had this close attention to detail at a spinning class before, and once our class was over she was impressed at the difference the adjustments had made to her workout.
We all hopped onto our bikes and began to pedal.
During a 10 minute warm up Carl took us through the various stages of speed and resistance we’d be using, made the final adjustments to the bikes and we were off.
The warm up was followed by:
12 minutes of high intensity, high tempo work
18 minutes of hill climbing with high resistance and low cadence
Interspersed with 5 minutes recovery
5 minute ‘jumps’ with high work rate
10 minute warm down and stretch
Throughout the session Carl played an upbeat, motivating playlist of modern music from Madonna to Faithless which you can listen to and follow here.
After a 50 minute workout the class and I were pretty proud of ourselves, having continually cycled for what I can only imagine equates to miles of beautiful Cornish countryside.
I’d recommend cardio cycle to everyone, even if you’re a total newbie like me. Carl caters to everyone’s level of experience, offering alternative levels of resistance to meet their abilities.’
