Barefoot running round up

On 11, 12, 13 October The Barefoot Performance Academy held the first Barefoot Running Clinic at Watergate Bay Hotel as part of the hotel’s active breaks. Watergate Bay is all about being active, socialising with friends and family and trying something new so barefoot running was the perfect activity for our guests.

The weekend was designed to teach a skill as well as, for existing runners, an opportunity to explore the possibilities of movement through the different activities the hotel offers.  As well as understanding the importance of rest and recovery.

Why barefoot running? 
Because Rollo Mahon at the Barefoot Performance Academy tells us that it has become the most powerful tool to rehabilitating injury.  Why?  Because our primary motor pattern (the way we coordinate movement) is walking, running and sprinting.  Our posture is set and calculated around bare feet, we are not born with shoes on our feet!  The shoes we wear changes our posture and therefore our biomechanics, as does modern living (working at a desk).  Form is lost in walking, running and sprinting so injury becomes common.

The weekend was about reconnecting with an art we are all losing from our modern lifestyles.  We all have the ‘hardware’ and ‘software’ already within us, what the Barefoot Academy does is allow runners to tap into it to re-connect with something that will infuse into all areas of your life.  This is not just about improving your running.  This is the very foundation to who we are and how we express ourselves.

It was with some trepidation that I signed up for this workshop… wondering if I would be out of my depth although I have been running most of my life!   Within 5 minutes of meeting Rollo, I realised that I had been worrying unnecessarily; his incredible energy and enthusiasm for barefoot running, injury prevention and nutrition is infectious and you can’t help wanting to immediately start his six week programme.   One look at Rollo and you can see that he practices what he preaches when it comes to healthy eating and exercise!

Rollo’s knowledge and expertise is boundless and I learnt so much from the workshop.  The workshop was extremely informative and very enjoyable …. the three days flew by.

I now can’t wait for “part 2” which has been promised for the spring!

The second of our active breaks, Swim Clinic, will be taking place from Friday 29th November to 1st December.
