As part of the Extreme Academy’s drive to encourage excellence in the sports that are so integral to Watergate Bay, we have a continuing sponsorship program of talented surfers, kitesurfers, longboarders and waveskiers. The Extreme Team is the perfect demonstration of just how much can be achieved through the combination of energy, passion and an incredible environment…

Dreya Wharry
Dreya successfully completed the first and only kitesurf crossing from the Isles of Scilly to Watergate Bay with an all-female team in 2004. In September 2005 she broke the world record for the longest continuous kitesurf journey, making a solo trip from Watergate Bay to Ireland.
This year, Dreya will be competing in the BKSA British tour – see her at Watergate Bay at the end of March - and she also has some big plans up her sleeve for a new world record. We can’t reveal what just yet, but watch this space!

Carl Coombes MBE
Carl Coombes is not just the Sports Manager here at the Extreme Academy - he's also the ex-Waveski World Champion. That's not to say he can only teach waveski, though; he's pretty awesome at all the sports we do here, so book a lesson - after all, how many chances do you get to be taught by a world champion?!
This year, Carl is hoping to compete in the Waveski World Championships to regain his title as World Champion.

Harry Timson
Even though he’s only 11, Harry has been surfing for 8 years – no wonder he’s the British Champion in the under 12 division. We’re proud that Harry counts Watergate Bay as his home break – you can see him here every weekend, making full grown surfers weep with envy. Watch this space – this young guy is going to be the next Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton rolled into one.

Joshua Coombes
Carl’s son and an accomplished surfer in his own right. Josh will be competing in all the junior surf competitions held at Watergate Bay this year – we’ll keep you posted with his progress!

Chris Thomson
So talented, you get the feeling he could surf a barn door and make it look stylish. Chris is a strong contender on the British Longboard tour, but still makes time to run longboard clinics at Watergate Bay, teaching small groups the mellow art of longboarding.
Chris rides: Tuflite 9’ Donald Takyama Noah Ka Oi.
Longboarding high points: With such a high-achiever, where do we start?! Coming in the top five in 7 competitions last year (1st in three of them) is awesome…appearing on Sky, GMTV and the BBC is pretty impressive, too!
Other sports Chris enjoys: Like he has time for any other sports!
Ambitions: To focus on developing surf coaching at Watergate Bay.

Chris runs the Watergate Bay Surf Club. Click on the logo for more details.
