Its only a few weeks until Veuve Cliquot Polo On The Beach returns to Watergate Bay on 18th & 19th May and we couldn’t be more excited! In the run up to the event we will be blogging all sorts of interesting information and facts about it.
To start us off we thought we’d introduce to you the first confirmed player of Team Joules; Tim Vaux. Tim plays at position one which is an attacking position. Although, in beach polo every position needs to be able to attack and defend as there are only three players per team and the pitch is so much smaller than in grass pitch polo.
Tim Vaux is a professional polo player and also runs the family business at Vaux Park Polo Club in Somerset. Some of Tim’s polo ponies will be playing at Polo on the Beach this year.
Equally at home on turf or sand he is a regular fixture at prestigious polo tournaments throughout the UK. He is regarded as an expert arena polo player and has participated in Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach since 2008.
Tim has been playing polo for 12 years, compared to other polo players he took up polo relatively late as a lot of the players start through pony club. Vaux Park Polo Club started 7 years ago and stables up to 100 horses in the summer. Tim owns 40 horses himself and they certainly keep him busy with feeding, schooling, exercising and grooming!
Tim’s best playing pony is ‘Good Girl’, he bred her at Vaux Park and will be riding her during the main match on Sunday 19th May at 5:30pm when team Joules look to retain their ‘Watergate Bay’ trophy from team First Great Western.
Handicap: four goals.
Describe the atmosphere at Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach.
“Watergate Bay is a stunning spot and has a friendly atmosphere. I would say there is much more friendly rivalry than there used to be. It has certainly got more competitive.”
What’s the buzz on the UK polo scene at the moment?
“The sport has gone through the roof in the last few years and is ever increasing in demand. After a slow start to the season due to the weather things are flying now which is good to see.”
In last year’s match, Tim was a vital member to Team Joules, scoring four of their nine goals and leading Team Joules to beat Team First Great Western 9 – 6 1/2.
