Tears, sweat and milk were all spilt for the second annual Barista of the Bay competition at Watergate Bay on Tuesday 8 December.
There’s more to being a barista than someone who makes and serves coffee.
An expert barista will understand the relationship between coffee, extraction times and flavour and can put together a beautiful richly flavoured espresso using a range of skills, taught by our speciality coffee suppliers – Origin Coffee Roasters.
That’s why Origin’s training manager Jessie returned to Watergate Bay to put five employees to the test in the hopes of being crowned Barista of the Bay.
The contestants (above l-r) were Mark (The Living Space), Josh (Swim Club), Javier (The Beach Hut), Chris (The Living Space) and Sam (The Beach Hut)
The challenge? Make three coffees – flat white, cappuccino, espresso – which will then be judged and drunk by our executive chef Neil Haydock, Beach Hut manager Laura and Living Space manager Andrea. Jessie was also on hand to mark the technical side.
First prize was a six-month coffee subscription to Origin Coffee Roasters, with second winning a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne.
First – Sam, The Beach Hut
Second – Chris, The Living Space
Third – Javier, The Beach Hut
Well done to all of our competitors who were put under an enormous amount of pressure with cameras and film crews all filming them!
Jessie, Origin Coffee training manager, said: “The overall standard of today’s coffee making was seriously impressive – all of our competitors should be really proud.”
We’ll drink to that.
