BSUPA National SUP Surf Championships – the results

The Extreme Academy once again played host to this year’s BSUPA National SUP Surf Championships. And with the tail end of a hurricane hitting our shores at the weekend, it was an epic battle.

Now in its seventh year, the BSUPA National SUP Surf Championships remain the country’s premier surf-only SUP event, drawing the best UK SUPpers to Watergate Bay. With all eyes on the weather and surf reports following the tail-end of a North American hurricane, Saturday brought thumping conditions.

Current and twice Champion Matt Barker-Smith was out to retain and claim his third consecutive national title, as was Open Women’s champion Holly Bassett, out for her third consecutive title against Marie Buchanan and Abi Barker-Smith, both pervious champions in the draw.

There was a fantastic feel to the beach over the weekend, with people coming from different parts of the UK to share experiences, try different boards and catch up with friends. Many competitors who were knocked out of the competition spent the rest of day free SUP surfing.

With positive development and growth in all divisions there were many stand out performances, particularly from the younger competitors. A special mention goes to Elle Veale who competed in the Under-16 Girls, while in the Under-16 Boys it was Ollie Laddiman, Blue Ewers, Guy Bridge and Finn Gamblin that would line up in the Final.

After an action-packed and controversial women’s final with a couple of interferences, Newquay-local Tina Barefoot eventually took first place with Holly Bassett second, Georgie Page in third and Marie Buchanan in fourth.

It was a clash of the Celtic Nations in the men’s open, with two Cornish riders Alex Murray and Ollie Shilston against Matt Barker-Smith and Glen Ovens from Wales. With very little between all four of them, Matt had done just enough to hold off Alex, claiming his third consecutive BSUPA National Title. Glen Ovens took third and Ollie Shilston fourth.

The organisers would like to express their unreserved thanks and appreciation to all sponsors, judges, photographers, competitors and families for coming along to compete and support, and making it a special weekend.
