With so much to choose from, the dilemma is what to come and see?
For the first time, British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA) and the British Stand Up Paddlesurf Association (BSUPA) will be collaborating to bring the brand new Legends of the Bay to Watergate on the weekend of 27 & 28 April. Whatever the conditions, spectators are promised a display of beach action.
Following its 40th anniversary last year, the English National Surfing Championships will see the next generation of young surfers battle to knock established competitors off the top spot, over several divisions from 4 to 6 May 2013.
The UK’s original beach polo event will return with a brand new weekend format for 2013. Traditionally held on a weekday evening in September, the event will now span across the weekend of 18 and 19 May. Some of England’s top international polo players will compete for the Watergate Bay Trophy in a thrilling display of beach polo, while spectators can get up close to the action and enjoy a beach barbecue and Champagne bar.
Watergate Bay will be the finish line for this race, taking place from 21 to 23 June 2013, which has been described as the toughest in the country. The Ultra Trail South West pushes runners to the limit with a 100 mile non-stop endurance race, the equivalent of running almost four marathons back to back.
RAF St Mawgan’s Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) will once again host a series of military themed fitness sessions at Watergate Bay. Attendees will be put through their paces with a gruelling circuit training session raising money for charity in the process.
The adrenaline-fuelled Thundercat Racing Series is making its second appearance at Watergate Bay from 28 to 30 June. The surf powerboat catamarans will race close to the shoreline in circuit races, fighting the incoming surf.
The Electric Beach Festival will return for its second year, following its debut in 2012 with hip hop legends De La Soul headlining the event. Around 2,500 people are expected to turn out for this year’s festival on 31 August 2013 with the headline act yet to be announced.
The fifth edition of the British Stand Up Paddle Association’s (BSUPA) National Championships will once again be hosted by the Extreme Academy. Some of Britain’s best stand up paddle surfers will compete for the title with divisions for both surf and distance racing from 4 to 6 October 2013.
Watergate Bay will host this international event for the first time from 11 to 13 October 2013. Over the weekend, the world’s top Thundercat racers will compete for the title of World Champion, while spectators can enjoy the action-packed races which are just metres from the shore.
Rounding off the year at Watergate Bay is the European Pro Longboard Tour in the Autumn. The best surfers from across Europe will compete for points in the race to become Europe’s champion.
