Five reasons to stay in… April

April has suddenly arrived, and there’s heaps happening at Watergate Bay and around Cornwall as the days get warmer and longer. Here’s our pick of the bunch. PS. Don’t forget to put your clocks forward on Monday 30 March.

Bodyboarding lessons

April onwards

New on the cards at The Extreme Academy for 2015 is bodyboarding, a sport which is thought to more accessible than surfing and often yields quicker rewards. It’s one of the best ways to learn how to catch waves, have loads of fun and progress on to stand up surfing.

Porthleven Food and Music Festival

24-26 April

Well worth adventuring to the south coast of Cornwall for. The theme for this year’s Portheleven Food and Music Festival is street food, so you can enjoy Spanish churros for breakfast, Japanese sushi for lunch and Filipino adobo pork for supper. Cooking demonstrations from our own executive chef Neil Haydock among others, including Antony Worrall Thompson and Rick and Jack Stein, will also join over 90 food and craft stalls surrounding the traditional harbour.

Legend of the Bay

18/19 April

Legend of the Bay returns to Watergate Bay for a second year and another dose of adrenaline – a unique event combining the disciplines of stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) and kitesurfing. Riders can enter in each individual sport, or compete for the coveted ‘Legend of the Bay’ title, awarded to the person with the highest combined score from both disciplines.

Outsid’er – St Agnes Outdoor Festival

10-12 April

A quirky weekend celebration showcasing the unique coast and countryside around St Agnes. Locals and visitors alike are invited to get involved with a feast of activities during Outsid’er, including foraged food walks, campfire cooking, rock pool rambling and sand sculpting competitions.

Tregothnan open weekend

11-12 April

One of the largest historic gardens in Cornwall, and the first place in England to grow and produce its own tea, Tregothnan is opening its doors to the public for one weekend only for a charity open day. With more than 100 acres to explore there’ll be plenty of peace and quiet among secluded groves along the banks of the river Fal. You’ll also find the word’s biggest rhododendrons with 40 foot crescendos of full flower.
