Josh and Dom crowned Legends

Legend of the Bay 2016 will take place on 23 & 24 April at Watergate Bay. Take a look at all the thrills, spills and wipe-outs from 2015.

All hail our very own Josh Coombes from Extreme Academy, as he takes joint title of Legend of the Bay 2015 alongside reigning champ Dom Moore. Here’s what you missed from a weekend of top sporting action.

Spectators were rewarded with brutally challenging conditions for this weekend’s Legend of the Bay contest, held 18-19 April at Watergate Bay, testing the strength and the ability of the UK’s best kitesurfers and stand-up paddle (SUP) boarders.

Back for a second year and gaining in popularity, the contest saw the kiting element take place on Saturday in dead offshore wind with gusts from 15-35mph and small waves. The pros made it look easy, with the highest points awarded to those doing the largest hacks off the waves.

Extreme Academy rider Josh Coombes, current BKSA champ Lee ‘pasty’ Harvey and Andrew Pieterse all made it through to the final which was postponed until the Sunday in anticipation of a large swell and stronger winds.

Day two didn’t disappoint. Sunday saw double overhead waves and a light off shore breeze, making for absolutely spectacular spectating but tricky SUP for riders. The first rounds got underway in Watergate’s notoriously dumpy low-tide waves.

As the wind picked up, the kitesurfing finalists took to the water in 12-15mph cross-offshore wind. Lee Harvey got some great waves and turns using his 9m kite to put him in overall first position in the kitesurfing comp.

Back to the SUP and it was great to see the girls ripping some of the biggest waves of the day, with Lizzie Bird and Marie Buchanan showing everyone how it should be done.

It was then down to business for the finals in powerful waves as the tide pushed up to high. After a horrendous paddle out, competitors were after a bit of luck in their wave selection, making some solid drops, long rides and nice turns. After a snapped leash from Josh Coombes, Devon’s Dave Ewer took the SUP crown after landing some closeout smashes.

In a surprise podium finish, Legend of the Bay (the competitor with the highest combined score from both disciplines) was a joint prize given to both Dom Moore and Josh Coombes who drew on points.

Speaking after the event, Josh said: “We had a fantastic weekend; great atmosphere, good friends, and surprising conditions. It was great to catch up with people I have seen in ages at a well-organised event. To win was a bonus!”

“Having surfed five heats in gnarly conditions for an hour and a half today in total, I’m absolutely exhausted – my hands are blistered!”

Well done and sheer respect to those who entered!

Hi Greg, Legend of the Bay is a combined SUP and kitesurfing event so our competitors weren’t surfing i’m afraid. The conditions were firing on Saturday morning though, and some surfers were really making the most of it! Did you get in at all?
