Real Cornwall, by boat

Back to blog

Yes, Cornwall’s beaches are some of the best in the world. But take a trip along our beautiful rivers, creeks and estuaries and you’ll discover a whole new side of Cornwall. Some would even say, the ‘Real Cornwall’. We take a cruise with the guys at Real Cornwall and see just that.

Ever dreamt of exploring South Cornwall’s beautiful rivers and creeks on your own boat? Cruising the Helford River and relaxing as you take in the scenery, spotting wildlife and passing all shapes and sizes of river craft along the river? Or going for an exhilarating blast across the Carrick Roads, blowing away the cobwebs and feeling the salt spray on your face?

Real Cornwall do just that, running a personal luxury cruise service from their 25ft motor cruiser ‘Kernow Wir’ (meaning Real Cornwall in Cornish, pictured below) which can comfortably sit up to six passengers with a fully qualified skipper and host.

Based in and around the River Fal on the south coast of Cornwall, this side of the coast does things a little differently to the north; it’s less rugged, more gentle and swap dramatic cliffs for lush, picturesque scenery. They work all the way from Truro down the Truro & Fal Rivers; across the Carrick Roads past Mylor and St Just; down to the bustling Falmouth harbour with all sorts of maritime activity to see; over to the lovely village of St Mawes, watched over by the twin castles of St Mawes and Pendennis; round St Anthony’s Head and up to Portscatho or across Falmouth Bay to the beautiful Helford River.

There are a number of different pick up points located around the area and as there is no fixed timetable or itinerary, where you go and what you see are entirely down to you and what you fancy doing that day.

As well as relaxing on the water, the Cornish theme continues with complimentary drinks and snacks on board; craft beers, lagers and ciders from local brewers, wine made from grapes grown and harvested just down the road in St Ewe and juices made and bottled down on the Helford. Their tea is blended by Cornish Tea from Looe and their own blend of coffee is from boutique roasters and all round coffee experts Olfactory in Penryn. So as well as having a lovely boat, Real Cornwall is the first floating barista in the South West!

You can also upgrade to food packages sourced from local producers, all served on board as you gently navigate the river.

Real Cornwall pride themselves on being family friendly, with brand new life jackets for babies, toddlers and younger children as well as adults and even five sizes of dog lifejackets for our furry friends. There’s lots to keep little ones occupied on board so hopefully you can have a few minutes to relax. Safety is paramount, so the boat is authorised by the Marine & Coastguard Agency, the skippers are fully commercially qualified and the hosts have at sea survival and first aid qualifications. All to give you a safe and enjoyable experience.
