Rip Curl’s search to find the ultimate junior surfer is coming to Watergate Bay on 15 and 16 August. Half of International GromSearch winners are on the World Surf Tour… who will be next one?
The word ‘grom’ doesn’t appear in the dictionary, but it’s most definitely in every surfer’s vocabulary. If it was in the dictionary, it would read something like… ‘Grom’ (noun), shortened from ‘Grommet’: an informal term for young inexperienced surfer, usually a little bit cheeky, usually (annoyingly) very good at surfing.
Watergate Bay will be awash with them as international surf brand Rip Curl, in association with Surfing GB, brings its final UK search for the next big thing in under-16s surfing to Watergate Bay.
The two days of competition at Watergate follow events at Croyde Bay, Devon and Freshwater in Wales. The surfers with the best two results over the three events earn a ticket to the European finals. From there the winners will go on to the world finals held in a mystery location.
Since its inception in Australia in 1999 the GromSearch series has continually unearthed the next generation of surfing stars such as 2014 World Surfing Champions Gabriel Medina, Stephanie Gilmore. The GromSearch is seen by most of the groms as the best event in the world, offering them the chance to show off their talents in a friendly and relaxed competition environment.
According to Nick Rees from Surfing GB, the standard of our young UK surfers should make for an impressive event. “This Watergate Bay UK finale is a really exciting and enjoyable competition for both competitors and spectators. We’re expecting a great turnout over the weekend from talented youngsters hoping to win a place in the European finals.”
Sean Harris for Rip Curl UK says: “Rip Curl is stoked to be bringing the Rip Curl Grom Search back to UK shores! It is a great stepping stone for the UK grommets who aspire to a future in surfing, with a chance to earn a spot at the European and ultimately the World Grom Search finals.”
A large turnout is expected, so let’s hope the surf and weather play ball.
Entries in categories for under 16, under 14 and under 12 remain open until three days prior to the event and application forms can be downloaded from www.surfinggb.com
