Apprenticeships - Meet Jodie from Swim Club

Back to blog

Apprenticeships are an alternative employment opportunity at Watergate Bay Hotel. It’s a way to learn a new skill whilst maintaining full time work and creating a career for yourself. We have a range of apprenticeships at the hotel from Beauty Therapy to Hospitality. They are a chance for motivated, enthusiastic and talented individuals to join a fast-moving and forward thinking business while studying for a nationally recognised qualification. The beach is on our doorstep, and we want you to make the most of it.

Meet Jodie, she is a Beauty Therapist Apprentice for our Swim Club team. Jodie is a fantastic role model for other apprentices and has recently won first place in the Cornish Skills competition which was a great personal achievement. Jodie will be representing both the college and Watergate Bay Hotel when she competes in the Worldskills UK regional heat in Birmingham in June 2018.

What made you choose an apprenticeship and what is your current role?
I chose an apprenticeship as I thought it would be a great way to learn the skills required for a new career, whilst working in that environment and earning a wage.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Working in Swim Club at Watergate Bay is an incredibly varied job, we get very busy with the guests popping down for a relaxing treatment or a swim in the pool. My role varies from giving Swim Club treatments to the guests or being a host welcoming guests, showing them around Swim Club and booking in their treatments. No two days are ever the same – which I love!

What’s your favourite part about working at Watergate Bay Hotel?
My favourite part about working at Watergate Bay Hotel is its stunning location right on the beach, it almost feels like a treat going to work when you have such amazing views. When people ask where I work I feel proud telling them as it is such an envious place to work and has a fantastic reputation.

What is your proudest achievement since joining?
My proudest achievement since joining is coming first in the Cornish Skills Awards from our beauty class. This involved taking part in a full days competition where I was judged by three industry ambassadors for my skills on a back massage with a scrub and two electrical body treatments. The next stage is going to Birmingham to compete in the UK Skills Awards and if I am lucky enough to score high, I would then get the chance to compete at the World Skills Awards in Shanghai.

What is the culture and work environment like?
One of the main reasons I love coming to work is the staff. Everyone is extremely friendly, passionate about their work and we all work well as a team, which results in a great working environment. It’s also great fun as you get to learn so much from your work colleagues, they were in the same shoes as you once and they know exactly how it feels starting a new career as a beauty therapist.

What advice would you give to a candidate interested in an beauty therapy apprenticeship?
I would tell them to go for it, it’s the perfect opportunity to start a new career whilst learning in a workplace environment.
