A new collaboration with one of our favourite local photographers has captured the rising power of mobile images and transformed them into something tangible – our new Watergate Bay posters.
Karl Mackie’s name is one you’ve probably heard us mention before. For us, the graphic designer-come-photographer’s atmospheric edgy shots capture life at Watergate Bay as it is – you’ll find them hanging in The Beach Hut and gracing the cover of last year’s Another Place magazine.
A creative behind the lens, Karl is no stranger to shooting on mobile. So at the beginning of 2015 we set him a new challenge: capture the Bay throughout our four changing seasons, in 12 images for each, using only a mobile device – in Karl’s case, an iPhone6.
Karl shot on average twice a day, always first thing in the morning, apart from during the winter season as when he looked to find something special, “something unique before the footprints.”
“It’s surprising what is left behind in the mornings! My favourite image of that time being the stone sculptures below.”
The most challenging season according to Karl was summer. “Rich blue skies, equally blue seas and the contrast of the sun make it hard for the iPhone to produce a great result. Subsequently, September was the best month to shoot with perfect lighting and activity around the Bay.”
“Halfway through the project I found a brilliant piece of kit from a Kickstarter called the ShoulderPod – a nifty device that allowed the iPhone to be mounted onto a tripod or handheld, allowing better accuracy. It turned out to be a must have piece of kit, particularly for the landscape shots where camera wobble was a problem.”
“Post production was all done in the VSCO mobile app keeping the entire project within the boundaries of the iPhone.”
The first two seasons of imagery have been framed and are currently on the wall in Watergate Bay Hotel, with a limited run of prints available in via our online store.
