…and answers to questions we’re often asked. If there’s something we haven’t covered please email Alison or tweet us @PoloOnTheBeach
GWR Polo on the Beach is free to attend; however, tickets will be available for the beach party on Saturday 19 May. Soon to be released. House party details >>
Polo on the Beach is a three day family friendly event. Adults and children of all ages are welcome!
Food and Drink
The Champagne garden, beach bar and Beach Hut barbecue and bar are open to everyone to purchase food and drink on the beach from 12 midday. The Beach Hut restaurant will also be open on the day although booking is strongly advised for dinner – it will get busy! Call 01637 860877 to book. Watergate Bay Hotel will be closed to non-residents.
Watergate Bay is dog friendly all year round. You are welcome to bring your dogs to the event but we ask for them to remain on a lead at all times around the pitch, Champagne bar and beach barbecue & bar.
The Extreme Academy car park will be full of event vehicles and horses so we encourage you to park in the event car park which will be in a marked field just up the road from the hotel at a cost of £3.50. This is easily accessible from the road and is in the direction of Newquay. From there it is a 10 minute walk down a cliff path to access the beach.
If you have specific parking requirements please contact us on 01637 860295.
Watergate Bay has a gently sloping tarmac slipway onto the beach which provides the perfect viewing point for those with disabilities. If you need any assistance on the day, there will be stewards available to help.
There are some public toilets just across the road from the hotel and we will be providing temporary toilets in the Extreme Academy car park. There is a disabled toilet in the Beach Hut opposite the beach.
We love to see your photos of the event so feel free to snap away! Take a photo on your camera phone and post it on Instagram using hashtag #potb17, or tweet it to us @PoloontheBeach.
What time does the 2017 event start and finish?
The arena opens on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 May at 3.3pm. Polo matches are at 6.30pm. The arena opens on Sunday 21 May at 10am.
What should I bring?
As always in Cornwall, check the weather. Even if it’s sunny it can get chilly in the evenings so warm clothes are advisable. There is no seating around the arena so you may like to bring your own camping chairs. Make yourselves at home!
What can’t I bring?
Please don’t bring glass onto the beach. BBQ’s are also not allowed in the event area.
What if it rains?
Hey, this is Cornwall. We can have four seasons all in one day! Polo on the Beach will still go ahead in the rain, just make sure you’re prepared with warm clothes and wellies as you will be outside. Only if we’re faced with a torrential storm or high winds, will we need to cancel the event for everybody’s safety – we’ve put in a request for sunshine and blue skies so let’s hope we’re lucky! Check on our website and twitter page for updates.
I can’t make the event – how can I get involved?
BBC Radio Cornwall will be broadcasting live from Polo on the Beach. You can also keep in touch on our Facebook page or on Twitter. We will be providing live updates throughout the day, including match results.
There are lots of ways to get in touch with us if you have any more queries. You can ask questions on our Facebook page or on Twitter, or for information on House Party tickets you can email Alison or call her on 01637 860295.
