WHAT IS POLO ON THE BEACH?

Polo is a surprisingly easy game to follow

Sometimes described as “hockey on horseback”, polo is a surprisingly easy game to understand. The finer points of the game are explained on our rules page but we also have some of the best commentators in the business on hand to explain the action throughout the weekend.

Beach polo is thought to originate in Dubai in 2004 and has becoming increasingly popular around the world since then, especially in warmer climates.

Watergate Bay was the first beach to host beach polo back in September 2007 and it always provides an action packed match as the polo ponies are able to accelerate, stop and turn very quickly on the sand.

Nicknamed the ‘King of sports’ and originating in Iran over 2,500 years ago as a war game, polo can also be played on snow as well as sand and grass. Other forms of polo include Segway polo, cowboy polo, elephant polo, camel polo, cycle polo and even kayak polo.
