If this is the summer of drive-in cinema, what better setting for a series of cult classics than on the clifftops above Watergate Bay?
Our friends at Wavelength surf magazine are hosting the ultimate drive-in cinema season this summer, every weekend from Friday 24 July until Sunday 6 September.
Pull up as the sun starts to sink to the horizon, and travel back to another era as the credits roll and the waves break on the beach below.
If you are staying at Watergate Bay Hotel this August it will be a unique cinema experience.
Re-live the terrifying Boneyard surf session and hilarious hunt for the silver surfer in 1995 surf and rave romp Blue Juice. Paddle out, skydive and philosophize (“It’s a place where you lose yourself and you find yourself”, man) with Johnny Utah, Bodhi and the Ex-Presidents in Point Break. Dance at Jack Rabbit Slims with Uma Thurman and John Travolta in Pulp Fiction. Hear live shanties from the real-life Fisherman’s Friends before watching the eponymous 2019 film that tells their story. Session the empty pools of 1970s LA in with the Zephyr skate team in Dogtown and Z Boys. Watch the iconic drive-in scenes in the midst of your own stunning drive-in scene with Grease. And wait for the lightening to hit the clocktower with Marty McFly and Doc Brown in Back to the Future…
All from the comfort of your car (with your own surround sound coming directly from your car stereo, via a special event-specific FM frequency), on a giant screen with the idyllic backdrop of twilight over the Atlantic ocean below.
There will also be street food and ice cream trucks, popcorn (of course!), craft beer, live music, a socially-distanced silent disco, and direct-to-car food service.
The much-loved British surf and rave romp Blue Juice – filmed in Cornwall and released in 1995, starring Sean Pertwee, Catherine Zeta Jones and Ewan McGregor – is kicking off the season. Rumour has it that Sean Pertwee – aka JC in the film – made a surprise appearance.
“The warmth and love that is shown towards Blue Juice by its legions of Cornish and UK fans after all this time is humbling. To see it again on a massive screen on the Watergate Bay clifftop with my friends and legend surf gurus Rob Small and Steve England (who taught me to have the stones to come off the point at Morro Negro, Lanzarote in swell so massive the sky went black, film it, ride it and not drown) will be phenomenal!” – Sean Pertwee, who plays lead character JC in Blue Juice
What's his take on it all? “I haven’t seen Blue Juice for at least 12 years – last time I was lamely trying to impress my 6-year-old son with my fearless, gnarley attitude,” he tells us. “I’m honoured to be invited back to my favourite place in the UK to watch – albeit somewhat narcissistically – the most challenging, incredible, hilarious experiences of my entire career. The warmth and love that is shown toward our film by its legions of Cornish and UK fans after all this time is humbling. To see it again on a massive screen on the Watergate Bay clifftop with my friends and legend surf gurus Rob Small and Steve England (who taught me to have the stones to come off the point at Morro Negro, Lanzarote in swell so massive the sky went black, film it, ride it and not drown) will be phenomenal! I’m just gutted we’re not all rammed into my old VW camper with the faint whiff of eau de old wetsuit, trying to recognise who's who in the rave scene. I hope you enjoy watching it again as much as we enjoyed making it. One Life, No Fear!"
